Dr. Kathryn Barrett-Gaines is a historian, scholar, and author specializing in African social history, particularly Ugandan society, popular culture, and music. An Associate Professor since 2004, she brings extensive academic experience and interdisciplinary expertise to her field.
She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in African History from Stanford University, along with advanced degrees from Duke University and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She has taught at Adelphi University, Xavier University of Louisiana, and held international appointments at the National University of Rwanda, Makerere University, and Stanford University.
A prolific writer, Dr. Barrett-Gaines authored One Little Guitar: The Words of Paul Job Kafeero and contributes to The Observer in Uganda. Her research appears in scholarly works such as the Dictionary of African Biography, Encyclopedia of the Modern World, and journals like African Economic History and History in Africa.
