I am Francis Stevens George, a Sierra Leonean–Norwegian author, entrepreneur and innovation practitioner whose life and work have been shaped by Africa, Europe and a deep interest in how societies respond to crisis, change and human possibility. I was born in Sierra Leone and raised in Freetown before leaving for boarding school in the United Kingdom in 1981. I later studied International Relations and Economics at the London School of Economics and completed postgraduate studies in business, innovation and management in Norway. My professional journey has taken me across Africa and Europe, working in international business, technology, entrepreneurship and enterprise development. Since returning to Sierra Leone, I have devoted much of my work to supporting entrepreneurs and strengthening the country’s innovation ecosystem through Innovation SL, which I founded in 2017. Beyond fiction, I also write about entrepreneurship, technology, African economic development and the importance of building institutions that enable people to turn ideas into opportunity and lasting social value together. Writing, however, allows me to explore questions that professional reports and business frameworks cannot fully capture: how ordinary people behave under extraordinary pressure, how power operates behind institutions, and how history, science and ambition can collide. My novel, Camp NoE, was first published in 2016 and was inspired by the Ebola crisis that devastated Sierra Leone and neighbouring countries. Although the story is fictional, it was written with profound respect for those who experienced the outbreak, particularly the families who lost loved ones and the health workers and communities who responded with courage. A decade later, I returned to that fictional world with Camp NoE: The Revelation. The new novel expands the mystery surrounding the camp and introduces Project Imhotep, drawing inspiration from the ancient African polymath Imhotep. I became fascinated by Imhotep after watching a documentary about Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code and wondering why African history and intellectual achievement were so rarely placed at the centre of international thrillers. I wanted to create a story in which African history, knowledge and identity were not background decoration, but essential to the mystery itself. I write stories rooted in Africa but concerned with universal human questions: survival, loyalty, power, memory and the consequences of scientific ambition. My hope is that readers will be entertained, challenged and encouraged to see Sierra Leone, and Africa more broadly, not merely through narratives of crisis, but as places of complexity, imagination, resilience and extraordinary stories.
